三、摘要:
Cancer is the second leading cause of death for both men and women in US, with projected rising number of new cancer patients per year to 29.5 million and rising number of deaths per year to 16.4 million worldwide by 2040. The most common treatments of cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and their combination. About 50% of all cancer patients will receive radiation therapy (RT). RT is a very complex treatment process requiring a high degree of accuracy, which is the subject of medical physics: first a 3D patient model will be established via simulation scans (CT, MRI, PET etc) and image fusion, and delineated with well-defined tumor targets and organs-at-risk (OAR); then a RT treatment plan will be designed based on this 3D patient model to deliver the prescription dose to targets while sparing OAR; last this treatment plan will be delivered to the patient with proper patient setup and imaging guidance to ensure the delivery accuracy, which sometimes requires adaptive planning and treatment to patient anatomy changes. This talk will introduce medical physics and some of our active research topics.
四、主讲人简介:
Dr. Gao is an Associate Professor and Director of Physics Research in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Kansas Cancer Center. Prior to joining KU in 2021, Dr. Gao served as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Mathematics, Radiology, and Radiation Oncology at Emory University, and Professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr. Gao’s research laboratory at KUMC is currently being funded by an NIH R37 MERIT grant, a KUCC physicist-scientist recruiting grant, and industry grants. Dr. Gao is board certified in Therapeutic Physics by the American Board of Radiology and provides clinical service at the KUCC Radiation Oncology located in the Richard and Annette Bloch Radiation Oncology Pavilion. He is dedicated to developing the next-generation imaging and radiation therapy modalities for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
